Secrecy at the British government’s Central Veterinary Laboratory in Weybridge and an “amateur” approach to statistical analysis led to a six-year delay in tackling the BSE crisis, according to evidence given to the official inquiry into the disease this week. Roy Anderson, professor of epidemiology at the University of Oxford, says that several times between 1989 and 1991 the lab refused him data on the spread of BSE among cattle.
