HOMING pigeons learn to adjust their solar compasses to the path of the Sun across the sky, regardless of where in the world they are raised, say German scientists. Roswitha Wiltschko at the J. W. Goethe University in Frankfurt knew that pigeons can learn the relationship between the position of the Sun, the time of day and geographic direction. But she and her colleagues wondered how homing birds which evolved in the northern hemisphere cope with life in the south, where the Sun appears to move across the sky in the opposite direction. To find out, they took a group of pigeons in New Zealand and tricked their internal clocks by putting them in a room with controlled lighting for five days and moving the time ahead by 6 hours. The birds then flew in a different direction from birds whose body clocks had not been shifted,
