By Barry Fox A helium balloon could break up the photochemical smogs that envelop Los Angeles, according to Daniel Redford of California (W097/38570). The smogs are caused by a layer of still warm air trapping moist cold air beneath it. Redford says that a helium balloon coupled with a large cylinder can restore normal convection and clear the smog. The cylinder is filled with humid air and carried by the helium into the upper atmosphere, where the air in the cylinder expands and cools. The water vapour in the air condenses and the water is dumped through a valve. The apparatus is then pulled back down to Earth by a cable. As the pressure increases, the dry air warms up, and when the cylinder reaches the ground it releases a bubble of dry warm air. The bubble rises rapidly and kick-starts circulation,
