CANADIAN scientists believe they have found out why bacteria called chlamydia, which cause diseases from pneumonia to gynaecological disorders, are so persistent. When cells are invaded by bacteria, our immune systems sometimes produce chemicals that make them self-destruct. A team led by Tao Fan of the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg suspected that chlamydia block this process. Sure enough, they found that infected cells survived after exposure to chemicals that prompt cell suicide, or apoptosis. Chlamydia infection also stopped cells producing a protein called mitochondrial cytochrome C, thought to be a key chemical in the apoptosis pathway (Journal of Experimental Medicine, vol 187,
