GERMAN researchers have designed a mobile stretcher that gives patients a smooth ride over the roughest ground, even when going up and down stairs. The stretcher is mounted on four telescopic legs, each with a wheel in contact with the ground. Sensors at the front of the stretcher detect any potholes or bumps and a small computer activates hydraulic cylinders in the legs to lower or raise the stretcher’s wheels, smoothing out the bumps in rough ground. Patients lie on a mattress that has several movable pads to support the body. The mattress is mounted on a cradle. Four electric motors move the cradle up and down to dampen any residual jolts. “For bringing people down steep stairs—a job that now requires three attendants and puts patients at a 45 degree angle—the telescopic legs will jack up the lower end of the bed to keep the person level at all times,” says Dierk-Oliver Kiehne of the Fraunhofer Institute for Technology Development in Stuttgart, where the stretcher was developed. When the stretcher is in an ambulance,
