OUR neighbourhood of the cosmos may not be as typical as astronomers believed. An international team announced last week that they have completed a computer simulation of the Universe from around 300 000 years after the big bang until now. They assumed that much of the material in the Universe is cold dark matter—slow-moving particles that help galaxies clump together. The virtual universe predicted that space now contains giant voids and superclusters of galaxies roughly the same size as the region of the Universe that astronomers have surveyed to date.
